    WASHINGTON – On Friday, a U.S. Court of Appeals rejected a request by the National Association of Broadcasters to stay the implementation of Federal Communications Commission rules requiring television stations to post their political files online. Free Press, an intervenor in the case along with the Benton Foundation, the Campaign Legal Center, Common Cause, the New America Foundation and the Office of Communication of the United Church of Christ, opposed the NAB’s request for a stay.

  • Declaration of Internet Freedom Gains Momentum

    WASHINGTON -- On Monday, Free Press announced that Oregon Senator Ron Wyden joined more than 1,500 groups and organizations and 50,000 individuals from more than 130 countries who have signed the Declaration of Internet Freedom since its launch on July 2.

    “The events of the last year, at home and abroad, made clear that access to an open Internet is vital to democracy, the advancement of human rights, individual empowerment and social progress,” Sen. Wyden said. “The Declaration of Internet Freedom lays out rights that must be defended.”

  • Free Press Action Fund Applauds Changes to Information Sharing Provisions of Senate Cybersecurity Bill

    WASHINGTON – Late Thursday, Senators Joe Lieberman, Susan Collins, Jay Rockefeller, Dianne Feinstein, and Tom Carper introduced a new version of their cybersecurity legislation, which could come to the Senate floor as soon as next week. Free Press Action Fund joined with other prominent civil liberties organizations and digital rights groups like the American Civil Liberties Union, Electronic Frontier Foundation and others in May 2012, voicing concerns about the information sharing regime established by the previous version of the Lieberman-Collins bill.

  • AT&T's Potential Price Hikes and Extra Tolls Show Failure of Competition

    WASHINGTON – On Wednesday, AT&T announced new data-sharing plans it will debut in August. The move follows a similar one by Verizon, which launched its own pricey shared-data plans in June.

    Free Press Policy Director Matt Wood made the following statement:

    “Unfortunately, new pricing plans like these lead to more expensive wireless bills for most consumers. These frequent price hikes, with the two largest carriers mirroring each other's every increase, underscore the need for real competition and choice in the wireless market.

  • Free Press Delivers 20,000 Petitions Against Journatic to Tribune Headquarters

    CHICAGO – On Tuesday, Journatic whistleblower Ryan Smith and volunteers from Free Press delivered more than 20,000 petitions to Tribune Co. headquarters in Chicago, calling on the company to stop doing business with Journatic.

  • Free Press Concerned About AT&T’s Plan to Charge for FaceTime

    July 17, 2012

    WASHINGTON – According to press reports, AT&T may begin charging customers an additional fee to use the FaceTime app over the carrier's cellular network. Until now, users have been able to access the application only on Wi-Fi networks. iPhone owners reportedly will be able to use FaceTime over cellular networks in new phones running iOS6, the next generation of Apple’s mobile device operating system, which will be released to the general public in September.

Darrell Issa announced that he had signed the Declaration of Internet Freedom, a set of principles supported by hundreds of companies, entrepreneurs, scholars and organizations including Access, the ACLU, Amnesty International, Cheezburger, Inc., Credo, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Free Press and Mozilla.

  • Free Press Pleased Supreme Court Denied Broadcasters’ Hail Mary Attempt

    WASHINGTON -- On Friday, the Supreme Court rejected requests by members of the media industry to revisit the constitutionality of the Federal Communications Commission's media ownership rules. In December 2011, the National Association of Broadcasters, Media General and Tribune Co. filed petitions for certiorari of the Prometheus II case, a U.S. Court of Appeals decision holding that existing FCC media ownership limits were both reasonable and constitutional.
