NEW BRUNSWICK — News Voices: New Jersey is bringing together community members, journalists, media makers, activists and others in New Brunswick on Nov. 11. The three-hour forum is an opportunity to brainstorm about the future of local journalism and its role in our communities.

Members of the media are invited and encouraged to both participate in and report on the meeting.

When it comes to news coverage, New Jersey is one of the nation’s most underserved states. Sandwiched between the New York and Philadelphia media markets, New Jersey receives little broadcast coverage of state and local governments. Traditional New Jersey newspapers and broadcast stations have experienced layoffs and budget cuts. Meanwhile, local news startups are experimenting with new business models in an attempt to bring fresh voices into the mix of local coverage.

“The goal of the News Voices forum is to strengthen connections between newsrooms and communities to build a healthier news ecosystem across New Jersey and tell meaningful stories that speak to people’s concerns,” said Mike Rispoli, the press freedom campaign director for Free Press. “We believe the future of quality local journalism lies in these sorts of collaborations.”
