We are now accepting applications for spring, summer and fall.
Free Press interns work on projects related to media policy, reform and activism. Day-to-day work includes research, online organizing, database maintenance and assistance in writing and updating website content. Interns end the semester with an informed sense of a nonprofit’s daily operations and understand the tools required for successful public interest advocacy.
Depending on a particular intern’s interests and experience, it may be possible to assist with special projects including outreach, promotion and event management (for conferences, issue briefings/summits, public hearings and other forums). Interns may also be involved in establishing contacts with journalists, allies and constituents. We occasionally need help answering phones and handling routine administrative tasks, but this is never the bulk of the internship.
Free Press seeks interns throughout the academic year, over the summer and during other school breaks. Free Press provides a small stipend to all undergraduate interns and supports students who qualify for work-study financial aid programs. Free Press also offers verification for academic credit for internships.
Qualifications: We are looking for people who are ready to roll up their sleeves and join the fight for better media. Applicants should understand the nature of Free Press’ work, which includes advocacy, organizing and lobbying, and public education and outreach conducted online and off. Interns must be prepared to work in a fast-paced environment and be responsive to shifting circumstances in Washington and elsewhere. Excellent organizational, management and communications skills are a must. Some knowledge of federal legislative and regulatory processes is helpful but not required. A working knowledge of media issues is highly preferred. Excellent writing and public speaking skills, as well as facility with word processing, spreadsheets and Internet software, are vital. Successful interns are self-starters who take their internships seriously and tackle each assignment with initiative, imagination, energy and determination.
How to Apply: Complete our online internship and fellowship application. Applicants must also fulfill their academic institution’s requirements for securing credit for the internship. We accept applications on a rolling basis but recommend submitting applications by Dec. 1 for spring opportunities, by March 1 for summer opportunities and by Aug. 1 for fall opportunities.
