WHILE
YOU STILL CAN!!!
Three singer/songwriters met at a Los Angeles recovery center
for those suffering from internet-related anger issues. How could Congress
vote
to destroy one of the only good things left in America? This made no
sense! How could so few people be enraged? What were people doing to
keep network
neutrality the law of the land?
They realized that they had found kindred spirits in one another and
needed to work through their newfound political rage. Their counselor
suggested
that they could channel their frustration through song, interpretative
dance, screaming or simply calling Congress over and over. When they
discovered that Michelle was afraid of morons, they decided to just do
the singing
part. And thus The BroadBand was born.
God Save the Internet is their first outing. It will soon be sweeping
the nation.
The Broadband is Kay Hanley, Jill
Sobule, and Michelle Lewis.
(with a special
guest appearance by Michelle's mom, Annette, who possesses a freakishly
beautiful voice, but still panics every time she gets an email with an
attachment on it)
Jill Sobule (www.jillsobule.com)
Singer/
Songwriter/ Rocker and Political Pundit (Learn to play guitar Ann Coulter!
And eat your heart out Anderson Cooper!)
Favorite Web sites: Huffingtonpost.com, Salon.com, NYtimes.com (until
you had to be a member). I spend way too much time on far right Christian
sites, like worldnetdaily.com (love
Pat Boone's weekly entry). Okay, I have a thing for Melaniegriffith.com.
Favorite blog: It changes daily, but this morning it is blog.wfmu.org.
Most recent download: Don't tell anyone... songs from the Broadway cast of Hair. Lou Reed's Heroin.
Quote: "When Scott Goodstein, trouble maker turned good guy activist, came to me with the issue of internet neutrality, I thought 'What can just one singer/songwriter do?' I called on my friends Kay and Michelle, who dropped whatever important personal things they were doing to help. Thus became... The Broadband."
Kay Hanley (www.kayhanley.com)
Former lead singer for critically acclaimed Boston alt rockers Letters to Cleo
Favorite Web sites: I am a celebrity gossip junkie and the Internet made me this way. Perezhilton.com, Pinkisthenewblog.com, Gofugyourself.com, Defamer.com (I won't embarrass the smarty-pants sites by putting them in this company but i do love Huffpost, Salon, Boston Phoenix online and the Boston Globe!). Oh, and MLB.com for Red Sox simulcast on WEEI - a gift from heaven when a Boston ex-pat lives in L.A.), and Dilettantesmusic.com (my band with Mish!)
Most recent download: Gun (Uncle Tupelo song) and Abacab by Genesis (re-mastered album - sweet!).
Quote: "The idea that the citizens of the world are somehow squatting on the telecom giants' pipes is ludicrous. When Jill sent us the link (to savetheinternet.com) and I found out what these guys were up to, I jumped at the opportunity to get involved. This is a fight for our generation, if ever there was one."
Michelle Lewis (www.michellelewis.com)
Singer/ Songwriter/ Composer/ Recording artist
Favorite Web sites: I spend too much time on myspace.com and I have no excuse, because I am not 15... but Epicurious.com, RhymeZone.com (when I'm writing lyrics), PixilGirl.com, Huffington Post, dilettantesmusic.com (my band with Kay!) and TripAdvisor.com (where I research exotic vacations I may never take).
Favorite blog: Bob Lefsetz is funny and I can justify my enjoyment of his pop culture rants by thinking they apply to my work.
Most recent download: Push It by Salt n' Pepa and the new Raconteurs record.
Quote: "We're like the Dixie
Chicks, only less well-known and more Jewish..."
