The power of the open Internet was on full display Monday as President Obama responded to questions from the public in a followup to last week's State of the Union address. And appropriately, one of the questions was about the president's support for the open Internet itself.

My full-scale reliance on the Internet to be an informed citizen and later to become a congressional candidate began in the summer of 2003. Because I felt obliged to conduct as much research as possible into all of the Democratic candidates for president in the 2004 cycle, I spent literally hours reading and watching online news coverage of most of the candidates.
