Net Freedom Fighters to Take Charge in Congress

Our efforts to save the free and open Internet have been catapulted forward by The Nov. 7 election results. And the outlook for better, more public-spirited Internet legislation is now quite good.
Reps. John Dingell (D-Mich.) and Ed Markey (D-Mass.) — both staunch supporters of Net Neutrality — is set to take command of telecommunications policy when their party reclaims majority power in the House in January.
According to a report in Broadcasting & Cable, Dingell said that he will take a new crack at a telecom reform bill, and that it would “clearly” have to better address Net Neutrality and the public interest in general. “Our duty is not just to the Bells, but to good public policy and to protecting the public interest,” he told reporters.
Dingell is expected to be seated as chairman of the powerful Energy and Commerce Committee, the panel that oversees phone, cable operators and Internet companies.

Markey will take the helm of the key Telecommunications and the Internet Subcommittee. He has been an outspoken champion for Net Neutrality. New telecommunications legislation by Dingell and Markey in 2007 would likely include Net Neutrality mandates from the outset. Also in the House Net Neutrality column are Silicon Valley Democracts Anna Eshoo and Zoe Lofgren
The victory vindicates soon-to-be-majority leader Nancy Pelosi, who decided over the summer to elevate Net Neutrality in the Democratic Party platform — a risky move after many a Washington prognosticator declared it a dead issue. Not so.
In the Senate all pro-Net Neutrality Senators won decisive victories in their states. This list includes members of both parties:
>> Sen. Akaka won in Hawaii with 61%
>> Sen. Bingaman won in New Mexico with 70%
>> Sen. Cantwell won in Washington with 58%
>> Sen. Clinton won in New York with 67%
>> Sen. Feinstein won in California with 60%
>> Sen. Kennedy won in Massachussetts with 69%
>> Sen. Menendez won in New Jersey with 53%
>> Sen. Nelson won in Florida with 60%
>> Sen. Nelson won in Nebraska with 64%
>> Sen. Snowe won in Maine with 73%
They will be joined by newcomers Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont), Sherrod Brown, (D-Ohio), Jim Webb (D-Virginia) and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minnesota) who have also come out in support of Net Neutrality.
Over the year, more and more politicians came to realize that the public was paying attention to this issue. The blogosphere caught fire and helped shift the momentum in Washington on this issue.
Whereas before, the big telephone companies and their coin-operated lobbyists were confident that Congress would simply roll over and do their bidding, today, no member of Congress can vote with the telecom cartel without full public scrutiny.
The major telecommunications bill pending in the Senate is a massive giveaway to the phone and cable companies, and should be blocked during the lame duck Congress. It’s time to start from scratch in 2007, and begin having a genuine public debate about what the future of the media and the Internet should look like.

Please America, please be aware that the rest of the world also use the Internet. I want to preserve its freedom, but I can’t send a message to your government from the website - I don’t live in North America.
An Englishman gave you the Internet - with no strings attached. That you can even consider you have the right to control the Internet is an example of the arrogance of a nation that believes it has absolute control.
Beware: the European Union now has many more people than the USA, and so do China and India. Maintain your attitude, as guardians and protectors of the world, when really all you are doing is looking after your own interests, and it will all end in tears. Your tears. Alone you have never won a war (since 1776) apart from Granada. Stop trying to be the bully-boys, you are no good at fighting wars. You invariably lose.
The Internet offers us all the chance of democracy. Not the farce we now see with one junta trying to push aside another so they can take control. We could find peace. We could ignore the war-mongers. In some senses this campaign panders to the belief that the US legislature is important - and that should not be true. It is, increasngly, an irrelevancy that is supported on very unstable premises, and a growing mountain of debt to the rest of the world.
When I write like this the pro-US brigade heap scorn (and more) upon me, but you must learn to listen, or your great country will be pushed aside by the rest of the world.

You forgot to mention that Senator John Kerry, who is a strong supporter of net neutrality, and who posted an opinion piece expressing that support here on your site, will now be in charge of the Senate Subcommittee that is in charge of this issue. Senator Kerry is now the ranking member of the Subcommittee on Technology, Innovation and Competitiveness. With the changes in Congress that Democratic control brings, Kerry will now chair this committee.

Greetings Lockwood, yes a good time to listen, see each other as important individuals. No disrespect to Tim Berners-Lee’s significant invention of the World Wide Web, the Internet goes back farther, for starters… (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Internet). Good to work together on these vital issues to protect the opportunity for all to contribute to make this a better world (hopefully:)).

We have to be careful; Comcast and probably other cable TV providers are placing commercials advertising on demand programming service. On demand programming is one of the reasons why the Internet providers do not want net neutrality. I believe that the cable TV providers are setting up the American public to desire on demand programming such that when a great majority of the American public desires on demand programming the cable TV providers can then say, well if you want on demand programming then we must get rid of net neutrality. Hence they will have the public support to get rid of net neutrality.
