Net Neutrality on PBS: Tune In and Log On
October 18th, 2006 by tkarr![]() |
Millions tuned in to PBS on Wednesday night to see the SavetheInternet.com Coalition featured in “The Net at Risk,” a documentary produced by award-winning journalist Bill Moyers. (watch it online)
Immediately following the broadcast, PBS.org hosted a live Web debate between Free Press Policy Director Ben Scott and phone industry flack Mike McCurry (pictured right), who last night accused bloggers of “covering up” other perspectives in the Net Neutrality debate.
Hmmm … Wasn’t it McCurry’s Astroturf organization that tried to buy its way into the blogosphere with tens of thousands of dollars spent on a disingenuous blog ad and phony animation?
Now, McCurry says bloggers are part of a cover-up conspiracy because very few of them took this brazen marketing ploy seriously.
While Scott and McCurry have left the PBS forum, the debate continues to rage.
You can join the online debate by logging in at Moyers’ PBS site.
It’s important to have you there. In the six months since our Coalition was launched, millions of Americans have joined the campaign, spoken out for Internet freedom, and put Congress and the phone companies on notice.
Wednesday night’s program made millions more aware of this issue. They need to hear the real voices of people like you to skewer the industry spin.

digging the bill moyers net neutrality story that i submitted to digg would help get the word out - i think it’s important for non-technical people to see something like this that will help them understand.

This is an incredible show. The telecom act of 1996 really opened a huge can of worms. Now the conglomerates want even more control.
Everyone needs to see this! And write the FCC!

A superb show. Anyone who thinks the big companies will look out for network neutrality on their own can buy the Brooklyn Bridge! As stated, we have already paid the money for the fiberoptic infrastructure during the 1990’s that the deregulated companies pocketed, and now plead poverty.
Write your congressman - kudos if they support, and a strong message if they don’t. Copy the FCC.

I’m surprised nothing was mentioned of how fast the mobile web connections are in South Korea or Japan.

This is such an issue for graphic artists and web designers that anything that restricts people’s access to the Internet is a threat to our economic and social well-being. The Internet is the greatest tool ever devised for free speech and economic growth. I am proud to stand with all of you through my company, Computer Publishing Concepts, to work to maintain net neutrality at all costs.
Moyer’s show was fantastic, and I brought it up to my group in one of my online graphic design classes at Mott Community College, where I am a graphic design student. Access to that class could be affected by removal of net neutrality.
