Call Your Senator for Net Neutrality

June 26th, 2006 by tkarr

[UPDATE, 3:15pm EST . . . They are discussing amendment now . . . Vote imminent . . . stay tuned . . .]

The Senate Commerce Committee “mark-up” on Senator Stevens’ massive Telecommunications Act has dragged through Tuesday without discussion of the Snowe-Dorgan Net Neutrality amendment. A vote on this is now likely to occur late Wednesday afternoon.

This vote is critical. If your senator sits on the committee, he/she needs to hear from you today. Ask him/her to vote in committee to support the Snowe-Dorgan Net Neutrality amendment to the larger Telecom Act (S. 2686). The amendment would reinstate protections for network neutrality and ensure that all content, applications and services are treated equally, prohibiting broadband network operators from blocking, degrading, or prioritizing service on their networks.

Here are the members of the committee who have not taken a strong position in favor of Internet freedom and for the Snowe-Dorgan Amendment. Call them now:

    Done.

Called Sen. George Allen. I told them to support the net neutrality amendment. They said they would pass the message along to the Senator. They asked for my name and where I was calling from.

  2. tourist Says:

Called my Senator, Hutchinson, twice. Friday 6-23-06 and Tuesday 6-27-06. I told them where I lived and asked the Senator to support Net Neutrality and vote for Snowe-Dorgan amendment. Her staffer said Senator Hutchinson did not have a position on net neutrality.

  3. PBCliberal Says:

Sent an internet form response to Nelson’s office overnight last night. Previously called and left voice mail in his telcom analysts’ voice mailbox pleading for him to put the people over the telco lobbyists.

[…] If that’s how you want the Internet to operate then don’t call your Senator’s office to implore him or her to vote against this bill. […]

  5. cooper1 Says:

Floridas Senator Nelson of Florida won’t commit, but I’ve quit counting on him to do the right thing, he has no one to challenge him(Katherine Harris) and he votes against progressive issues,(for repealing the estate tax) I have given up on him.

  6. dandodd Says:

Called Senator Hutchinson supporting Snowe-Dorgan after the House bill passed about two weeks ago. Called again today supporting Snowe-Dorgan. Senator has not decided yet.

  7. chandler n hollywood Says:

I sent email last week and received a lenghthy reply from Sen. Ensign R-NV. I called his office today and left the request with a staffer named Mike. He asked for all the regular constituant info, addy and phone.

  8. candide Says:

i also contacted Senator Hutchinson’s office today (6/28). good to see Texans trying to make a difference. After a few busy signals, got through to a staffer. he was very nice, i asked for her position. The staffer said she had not decided and was waiting to hear from more of her constituents. I asked her to vote for the Snowe-Dorgan amendment.

  9. DG Says:

Called Sen. Hutchison’s office and asked her to support the amendment. Guy answering the phone said, “Okay, that’s all you’ve got to tell me.”

  10. pattyp Says:

Just called Nelson-FL. His staffer said (paraphrasing) while Senator Nelson hasn’t made any statement for or against the legislation, he strongly believes the Internet has thrived due to its being free and open to anyone and feels it should continue that way. I get the impression he will vote for the Dorgan/Snowe amendment. FWIW.

  11. doxy Says:

Called Sen. Hutchison’s office just now, and she’s still not made a decision on this because she’s waiting to hear from more constituents. I’m going to ask my husband to call in a little bit.

  12. Ecographic Says:

Canadians are counting on all of you in the US to do the right thing. Please call your senators today to urge their support for this ammendment. If Net Neutrality is not upheld in the US, it will have a worldwide impact, paving the way for other countries to do the same thing, including Canada…. if this happens the impact on small independant businesses everywhere will be absolutely devastating.

  13. Mike L Says:

I called Senator Smiths office and told them how I felt. I got agood response from the staffer, very polite.

  14. bb Says:

I called Sen. Lautenberg’s office and they said he supports net neutrality. So we can count on his vote.

  15. Ignoramus Says:

I’m so depressed. Why oh why oh why oh why oh why, don’t you SAY WHAT THE AMENDMENT SAYS? I’m supposed to call my senator and tell them to support something, without knowing what it says?

I suppose I will call and urge them to support “net neutrality”, but it would be soooo much better, if I knew exactly what the amendment proposes.

There is this same problem with the rest of this campaign, and it’s probably people just go “huh?” when you talk to them about this. Because you don’t explain, it registers as some confusing thing that people will have to look into later.

If you had explained HOW EXACTLY the legislation is attacking net neutrality. HOW EXACTLY the amendemnt remedies the situation, I think more people would pay attention.

  16. PBCliberal Says:

And that is exactly the problem. The neutrality of the network is tied to the network’s history. We never had such concentration of power before, so the free market always worked against a duopoly controlling 98% of user’s access.

The best way to figure out what the S2360 says, is to read it in its entirety. You can find it here in PDF format. The findings section is particularly important, because it details the complicated history of regulation that is expiring that puts us where we are.

  18. Caitlin Says:

I’m trying to listen to the SCC, who are discussing the bill RIGHT NOW, but the webcast keeps going in and out and the SCC website is loading incredibly slowly.

Does anyone know what’s happening? Of the little I could hear, it sounded like Olympia Snowe was saying that she and Dorgan weren’t going to offer the bill at this time.

  19. Caitlin Says:

Nevermind. She’s definitely making the pitch now, although I can only hear about thirty seconds at a time. :/

  20. tkarr Says:

Wires are overloaded at Senate site . . . conspiracy? [kidding]

  21. Caitlin Says:

Possibly, because as soon as it was Ted Stevens’ turn to talk, it started working PERFECTLY. ;)

  22. Caitlin Says:

OMG, STFU Ted Stevens. I finally got a good connection, and he ranted for 12 minutes without letting anyone get a word in edgewise. And now, of course, the webcast is gone completely!

  23. JimEH Says:

I called Allen’s office (I’ve called them nearly every day for the past week), and the staffer said, when asked, that he hasn’t taken a position. I told her I work for a small Internet-based business in VA, and I consider Net Neutrality vital for such businesses. Staffer said they’ve been hearing from a lot of people with that opinion.

  24. JimEH Says:

Hmm; it may be a good sign that Stevens spoke that long. If he had the vote sewn up, he probably wouldn’t have bothered.

  25. Caitlin Says:

I hope you’re right, but listening to him on and off over the past two days, I get the idea that he’s just generally long-winded.

  26. Kizor Says:

On behalf of the innumerable people who are biting their nails, can I ask for a link to the webcast?

  27. Kyle Says:

Senator Ron Wyden is speaking about the bill on the Senate floor right now. CSPAN-2. He is saying that Snowe and Dorgan weren’t successful. He’s asking that Congress slow down the legislation so there is more time to discuss it.

  28. DrBobby Says:

Called Senator Lott’s office at 12:30 P.M. CDT. Staffer took message; didn’t sound like she was writing my comments down about supporting the Snowe-Dorgan amendment, but one can hope.
