Google-Verizon Deal: The End of The Internet as We Know It
By Josh Silver, August 5, 2010
For years, Internet advocates have warned of the doomsday scenario that will play out on Monday: Google and Verizon will announce a deal that the New York Times reports "could allow Verizon to speed some online content to Internet users more quickly if the content's creators are willing to pay for the privilege."
The deal marks the beginning of the end of the Internet as you know it. Since its beginnings, the Net was a level playing field that allowed all content to move at the same speed, whether it's ABC News or your uncle's video blog. That's all about to change, and the result couldn't be more bleak for the future of the Internet, for television, radio and independent voices.
How did this happen? We have a Federal Communications Commission that has been denied authority by the courts to police the activities of Internet service providers like Verizon and Comcast. All because of a bad decision by the Bush-era FCC. We have a pro-industry FCC Chairman who is terrified of making a decision, conducting back room dealmaking, and willing to sit on his hands rather than reassert his agency's authority. We have a president who promised to "take a back seat to no one on Net Neutrality" yet remains silent. We have a congress that is nearly completely captured by industry. Yes, more than half of the US congress will do pretty much whatever the phone and cable companies ask them to. Add the clout of Google, and you have near-complete control of Capitol Hill.
A non-neutral Internet means that companies like AT&T, Comcast, Verizon and Google can turn the Net into cable TV and pick winners and losers online. A problem just for Internet geeks? You wish. All video, radio, phone and other services will soon be delivered through an Internet connection. Ending Net Neutrality would end the revolutionary potential that any website can act as a television or radio network. It would spell the end of our opportunity to wrest access and distribution of media content away from the handful of massive media corporations that currently control the television and radio dial.
So the Google-Verizon deal can be summed up as this: "FCC, you have no authority over us and you're not going to do anything about it. Congress, we own you, and we'll get whatever legislation we want. And American people, you can't stop us."
This Google-Verizon deal, this industry-captured FCC, and the way this is playing out is akin to the largest banks and the largest hedge funds writing the regulatory policy on derivative trading without any oversight or input from the public, and having it rubber stamped by the SEC. It's like BP and Haliburton ironing out the rules for offshore oil drilling with no public input, and having MMS sign off.
Fortunately, while they are outnumbered, there are several powerful Net Neutrality champions on Capitol Hill, like Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Henry Waxman, Jay Rockefeller, Ed Markey, Jay Inslee and many others. But they will not be able to turn this tide unless they have massive, visible support from every American who uses the Internet --- whether it's for news, email, shopping, Facebook, Twitter --- whatever. So stop what you're doing and tell them you're not letting the Internet go the way of Big Oil and Big Banks. The future of the Internet, and your access to information depends on it.
Author's note: Notice how a company can change their tune in the name of profitmaking. From Google in 2006: "Today the Internet is an information highway where anybody - no matter how large or small, how traditional or unconventional - has equal access. But the phone and cable monopolies, who control almost all Internet access, want the power to choose who gets access to high-speed lanes and whose content gets seen first and fastest. They want to build a two-tiered system and block the on-ramps for those who can't pay."

Has anyone ever read
Has anyone ever read Fahrenheit 451? That's where America is heading if this deal is allowed. Within a few short years, information will most likely be tightly controlled and censored, and our last true link to free speech destroyed. We need to fight this!
Do no evil
Hi guys, your motives are good, but you are blowing the content. From Timothy Karr on down, you claim that Google has a motto of not being evil. In fact, their motto is not doing evil. This is very close to the Buddhist notion of 'ahimsa'. What I did in my reply was remind them of their vow to do no harm. A lot of these guys in Silicon Valley, Steve Jobs comes to mind, were students of my teacher, Kobun Chino Otagawa Roshi. Check out http://www.jikoji.org to see his face. Kobun had great influence in the Valley, but he died. Now people are running around without a teacher, and in doing so, perhaps falling prey to evil influences. So, remember, these people are good people. I know them. They are not evil people. Please do not call them that ever again. Please change your campaign to reflect the truth, "Stop doing evil!"
Weeble Wobble What?
Not enough info to back up any of these claims. But if there is a pay system for faster content, I'd imagine my uncle's video blog wouldn't need anything delivered as fast as high traffic content.
Is it possible this selling of faster delivery capabilities could be more directed towards delivering larger than usual file size content (video games, blu ray movies, possibly even 2k - 4k resolution movies) and not creating a "doomsday" scenario across the internet?
Just saying...can't be gettin all "sacrifice the virgins" till you know what's what
and have some credible links to support.
WE HAVE TOO MUCH INFORMATION FOR "THEM"
I am not in doubt that Pelosi, Reid et al, want to tell the public they want net neutrality, but I dont believe a word of it. You have the Majority leaders of both houses supporting it (or so they say) but they cant herd the corporate cats in their party???? Something truly stinks here. We know the Homeland Security and all these outsourced private intelligence services are watching everything we do. They know the majority is waking up Apartheid Theocratic Israel, and therefore the truth about Israel and the US unholy alliance is well known. We know that Wikileaks and other groups did what none of the corporate owned media did...expose the truth about Iraq, Afganistan and the next country in the Bush/Obama regimes is to attack Iran. We wouldnt have ex Cia agents exposing the truth! We wouldnt know anything we do today if not for the internet and bloggers who do the real job of reporting and delivering information. Anyone who is dumb enough to think the democrats want to keep net neutral believes in the tooth fairy. These corporate whores in DC are about corporate america, about keeping the citizens from being informed or expressing our opinion. While I believe Al Franken is a true deal on this issue, I do not believe Pelosi and Reid give a twit about the people and OUR fundamental right to free speech.
Save the internet in the USA
They want to charge us for an average internet speed?
Where in America do we have decent internet speeds.
Already Europe and Japan have far surpassed anything we have...so now
instead of boosting the network across the USA equally which is essentially their job.
They want to cover-up their poor performance and inability to negotiate a faster internet with other providers by charging us for a decent internet speed.
I guess everyone is doing it...look at BP charging the taxpayers for their mess...
absolutely inhuman and shameful what companies are getting away with in the USA.
We are long overdue for a revolution of 'common-sense and decency' in this country.

False
There are several reports saying that the NY Times (big surprise) was wrong. Their info was bad, Google was talking to Verizon but not about this in particular. I believe it was about mobile access, but not the internet as a whole. http://gizmodo.com/5605310/google-just-killed-net-neutrality
They have been updating frequently on this saga. There is in fact some kind of discussion going on, but what exactly is not clear. Google has reiterated its commitment to Net Neutrality.
Freedom Privacy & Respect
Dear Google,
You now facilitate nearly all my searches, my email, my phone, much of my entertainment media (YouTube), soon maybe book purchases too. Would you do us all a favor and remember what drew most of us to you was freedom, privacy, & respect & a damn good search engine.
Would you please restate your commitment to net neutrality to the public.
And YES SPEEDING UP ONLY CERTAIN CONNECTIONS COMPROMISES NEUTRALITY.
OMG!
They're going to start charging for Facebook too!
(This is an "internet urban myth" / conspiracy theory you've fallen for.)
No link to your claim.
I couldn't find information about that claim. Could you provide the link so I may follow that information? The internet become controlled, I personally feel this is the perfect opportunity create another internet. I have more that one Sci-Fi book talking about searching the internets.
Really?
Probably not...the world will continue just as it has when big banks controlled the lending market and the US slipped into a recession every ten years...
I have an issue with this, once big business controls who sees what on the internet...our ability to change systems will be gone. The kiva.orgs of the world will be moot to companies with larger budgets and our ability to make positive changes through collaboration will be eliminated. It will be up to the larger budgets to decide what initiatives we take part in...
The MPAA and RIAA have experienced the power of the internet when completely unrestrained...not that I agree with filesharing, but I know I would rather have a free internet as a tool at the disposal of public America than I would have a network controlled soapbox.
BTW, I read a stat just recently that says social media is become the major activity of the internet user...not hanging out on search engines. Google is scrambling...
Oh and my job depends on free internet...I wonder how many other people would lose their jobs over this? Do we really need the unemployment numbers to rise to 12 or 15%?
Really?
"Doomsday"?
Doomsday? Really?
the sky is falling! the sky
the sky is falling! the sky is falling!
